A long awaited honor for Samuel Sanchez

It was a long awaited victory for Euskaltel and Samuel Sanchez who never won a stage of the Dauphiné before. The 2008 Olympic champion and king of the mountains of the 2011 Tour de France hadn’t won a race since the Tour of the Basque country last year. Unhappy with his result at the Giro d’Italia (12th), he came to the Dauphiné with strength and hunger, attacked at the right time in the col du Noyer and outsprinted his last rival, Jakob Fuglsang, in a trouble free stage for race leader Chris Froome. Canadian cyclist David Veilleux claimed a fantastic solo victory in the Swiss Alps as he arrived in Champéry almost two minutes before the peloton of the top favorites. Being the first attacker of the day after only three kilometers of racing as soon as the terrain became hilly, the Europcar rider got a well deserved victory made of 118 kilometres of breakaway, including 47 alone! A quarter of a century later, he pursues the legend of his compatriot Steve Bauer who won the prologue of the 1988 Criterium du Dauphiné.  »

Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano) won the opener of the 2013 Tour de Picardie after taking the sprint at the end of a stage which was marked by a five-man breakaway. Fresh off his hat-trick at the Tour of Turkey, and just one day shy of his 25th birthday, the German flexed his muscles and showed he is a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming big races. On the French side of things, talented Bryan Coquard confirmed his potential by finishing second, while third-placed neo-professional Erwann Corbel posted his first eye-catching performance on this level.  »

After having won Paris-Nice just a few weeks ago, Richie Porte had considered working as a team mate for Chris Froome inside the impressive Sky team on the Criterium International. The Australian’s victory on the day’s afternoon time trial could change the plans. Porte indeed showed that the month of March suits him beautifully clocking the best time on the 7-kilometre course and beating Boaro and Van Garderen. He therefore captures the overall leader’s yellow jersey that he’ll be carrying on his shoulders for tomorrow’s mountain stage heading to the Col de l’Ospedale.  »
