Stéphane Peterhanel gewinnt vorletzte Etappe

Peterhansel und Roma halten Spitze in der Gesamtwertung

Auch auf der vorletzten Etappe lief für das Monster Energy X-raid Team alles nach Plan. Gesamtführender Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) und sein Co-Pilot Jean-Paul Cottret (FRA) gewannen im grünen Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing die Prüfung und bauten ihren Vorsprung um weitere 20 Minuten aus. Das russisch, deutsche Duo Leonid Novitskiy / Andi Schulz kamen im orangnen Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing auf dem dritten Rang hinter Giniel Devilliers ins Ziel. Die beiden Portugiesen Ricardo Leal dos Santos / Paulo Fiuza erreichten im roten Monster Ernergy MINI ALL4 Racing die sechste Position und platzierten sich damit genau vor ihren spanisch, französischen Teamkollegen Nani Roma und Michel Périn im gelben Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing. Zürich, 14.1.12 Red. (mk) Auch heute mussten die Piloten im Biwak erst einmal tief durchatmen. Die 275 Kilometer lange Strecke hatte sie wieder durch die peruanischen Dünen geführt. „Diese Dünen sind unglaublich hart“, so Schulz, Co-Pilot von Novitskiy. „Hier merkt man wieder, was eine harte Dakar wirklich ist.“

Die guten Dinge passieren hin und wieder ungewollt: Peterhansel wollte die Prüfung eigentlich nicht gewinnen, aber es kam anders. „Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, den Vorsprung in der Gesamtwertung zu halten, aber den Sieg nehme ich natürlich gerne mit“, freut sich der Franzose. „Aber wir dürfen nicht vergessen, dass wir morgen noch eine Etappe vor uns haben. Ich bin erst beruhigt, wenn ich über die Ziellinie gefahren bin.“

Auch Novitskiy und Schulz zeigten wieder ihr Können in den Dünen. Nach dem gestrigen zweiten Platz konnten sie sich heute den dritten Rang hinter Giniel de Villiers im Toyota sichern. Das Duo umging alle „Fallen“ in der Prüfung und kam ohne sich festzufahren ins Ziel. Durch seine konstante Leistung konnte er in der Gesamtwertung an Robby Gordon vorbeiziehen und den vierten Rang übernehmen.

Die Dünen nach Pisco brachten für Roma kein Glück. „Ich musste einem Motorradpiloten und einem Auto ausweichen, die sich beide festgefahren hatten“, berichtet der Spanier. „Doch dann bin ich in einem Loch gelandet und steckte selbst fest.“ Ihm kamen seine beiden portugiesischen Teamkollegen Dos Santos und Fiuza zur Hilfe. „Ich war froh, dass ich sie hinter mir hatte“, so Roma. Er büßte trotzdem über 20 Minuten auf seinen Teamkollegen Peterhansel in der Gesamtwertung ein.

Das portugiesische Duo kam trotz der Hilfestellung auf dem sechsten Rang ins Ziel. „Das war ganz schönes Stück Arbeit Nani aus dem Loch zu holen“, erzählt Dos Santos. „Ansonsten verlief die Prüfung für uns mehr als gut.“ Für Holowczyc bilden die Dünen in Peru kein gutes Pflaster. Der Pole fuhr sich erneut fest. „Graben, graben, graben – so sah der Tag heute für uns aus“, fasst Holowczyc zusammen, der mit mit Rang zwölf zufrieden geben musste.

Die beiden Russen Alexander Mironenko und Sergey Lebedev kamen auch heute im BUER BMW X3 CC gut durch die Dünen und erreichten als Neunte das Ziel. Zwei Positionen dahinter lag das chilenisch, französische Duo Boris Garafulic / Gilles Picard im Vision Advisors BMW X3 CC. „Wir sind am gleichen Platz steckengeblieben wie Nani“, erzählt Garafulic. „Ich muss sagen, Peru ist um einiges härter als Chile.“ Die beiden Deutschen Stephan Schott und Holm Schmidt waren wieder vom Pech verfolgt. Ein Konkurrent fuhr auf der Prüfung rückwärts, da er sich festgefahren hatte, und krachte in den KS Tools BMW X3 CC. Schott musste daraufhin auf den X-raid Racetruck warten, um den Schaden zu reparieren. Er ist noch auf der Prüfung unterwegs.

Die letzte Etappe am morgigen Sonntag ist zwar nur 29 Kilometer lang, allerdings müssen auch hier die Piloten zwei kleine Dünenfelder durchqueren. Es ist also noch nichts in trockenen Tüchern. In Lima angekommen, geht es für die Teilnehmer bereits kurze Zeit später übers Podium.

Stéphane Peterhansel wins penultimate special stage

• Peterhansel and Roma still hold the top positions in the overall standings

• Leonid Novitskiy works his way up to fourth

The penultimate special stage proved to be another good one for the Monster Energy X-raid Team. Overall leader Stéphane Peterhansel and his co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret (both France) won the special stage, with their green Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing and extended their lead by another 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Russian-German crew Leonid Novitskiy / Andi Schulz in the orange Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing finished third behind Giniel de Villiers. The two Portuguese Ricardo Leal dos Santos / Paulo Fiuza took their red Monster Energy MINI ALL4 Racing to sixth position, thus finishing right ahead of their team-mates Nani Roma (Spain) and Michel Périn (France) in the yellow sister car. And Polish-Belgian pairing Krzysztof Holowczyc / Jean-Marc Fortin in the ORLEN MINI ALL4 Racing came 12th, today.

Once again, the drivers were really exhausted when arriving at the bivouac as today’s 275-kilometre special stage featured another heavy dose of the Peruvian dunes. “These dunes were extremely tough,” said Novitskiy’s navigator Schulz. “Here, you realise that the Dakar is a truly gruelling event.”

Sometimes, the good things happen just out of the blue. Peterhansel hadn’t planned to win the special stage but then, it just happened. “I had set myself the goal to just defend my lead in the overall standings but it goes without saying that I don’t say no to this win,” said the Frenchman. “Nonetheless, we mustn’t forget that there is another special stage to be contested, tomorrow. I won’t relax before having crossed the finish line.”

Novitskiy and Schulz also demonstrated once again that dune sections suit them well. Having finished runner-up yesterday, they came third behind Giniel de Villiers’ Toyota, today. The pairing succeeded in avoiding all the ‘traps’ of the special stage and made it to the finish without having got stuck. Thanks to their consistent performance, they succeeded in passing Robby Gordon for fourth position in the overall standings.

Roma, however, wasn’t that lucky, in the dunes to Pisco. “I had to avoid a bike rider and a car that had got stuck,” said the Spaniard. “But then, I drove into a hole and got stuck myself.” Fortunately, his Portuguese team-mates Dos Santos and Fiuza soon approached to help him. “I was happy that they were behind me,” admitted the Spaniard. Nonetheless, this incident cost him more than 20 minutes compared to his team-mate and overall leader Peterhansel.

Despite having helped Roma /Périn, the Portuguese pairing finished sixth. “Getting Nani out of the hole was hard work,” revealed Santos. “Apart from that, our special stage was rather uneventful.” For Holowczyc, however, the Peruvian dunes turned out to be a far more difficult area. The Pole got stuck once again. “It was a day of digging, digging, digging,” said Holowczyc who consequently had to settle for coming 12th.

Meanwhile, the two Russians Alexander Mironenko and Sergey Lebedev in their BUER BMW X3 CC encountered no problems in the dunes and finished ninth – two positions ahead of the Chilean-French crew Boris Garafulic / Gilles Picard with the Vision Advisors BMW X3 CC. “We got stuck at the same place as Nani,” said Garafulic. “I have to admit that Peru is clearly more gruelling than Chile.” The two Germans Stephan Schott and Holm Schmidt had to cope with another dose of bad luck. An opponent was going backwards as he had got stuck – and crashed into the Germans’ KS Tools BMW X3 CC. So, Schott had to wait for the X-raid race truck to be able to repair the damage. He still is on his way to completing the special stage.

The distance of tomorrow’s final stage amounts to just 29 kilometres but the drivers will have to cross another two – minor – dune fields. So, the fat lady has not yet sung. A short time after having arrived in Lima, the competitors will roll over the podium.
